Billie Jean Shaw is a reporter/anchor with the NBC affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina. She joined the NBC Charlotte team in April 2017. Since joining the team, she has covered breaking news, local politics, enterprise pieces and fills-in on the anchor desk when needed. As a native Carolinian, her reporting brings a unique and trustworthy perspective to the audience.

Her determination as a reporter gives her access to critical interviews and witnesses to advance and authentically tell stories. In 2016, Billie Jean was the first reporter to speak with the family and attorney of Keith Scott. The story gained national attention after a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer fatally shot Scott, sparking several nights of protests.

Prior to working at NBC – WCNC, Billie Jean was a reporter and anchor at the NBC affiliate in Columbia, SC. In 2015 she covered the removal of the Confederate flag from the State Capitol. She was also one of the first reporters to the scene of the tragic shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC. Just hours after the devastating crimes, Billie Jean was the first to report the details surrounding the shooting before any local or national network.

In 2013, she was hired as an Assignment Desk Editor and Digital Journalist at the FOX affiliate in Charlotte, NC. While at FOX, Billie Jean was the first to report on the historic Civil Rights case of the “Friendship Nine,” breaking the news that a judge would overturn the men’s 54-year old convictions.

In 2017, the South Carolina Senate recognized Billie Jean’s work by issuing a proclamation applauding her professionalism and service to the community.

Billie Jean graduated from Winthrop University where she earned a BA in Mass Communications with a minor in Marketing. During her time at Winthrop, she worked in Washington, DC covering political news on Capitol Hill.

She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the National Association of Black Journalists.
